KIM FOURNAIS IS FOUNDER AND CEO OF SAXO BANK. HE HAS STEERED SAXO BANK FROM AN EARLY ONLINE TRADING PIONEER TO A LEADING FACILITATOR OF GLOBAL CAPITAL MARKET ACCESS, SERVICING PRIVATE AND INSTITUTIONAL CLIENTS IN MORE THAN 170 COUNTRIES.
Fournais held various positions in the financial sector, before he established a brokerage with partner Lars Seier Christensen in 1992 under the name Midas. In 2001, Midas attained a bank license and was officially renamed Saxo Bank.
As CEO and one of the main shareholders, Fournais today continues to head the bank he founded 25 years ago.
Saxo Bank started its journey as a brokerage with Fournais and only a few employees, but quickly grasped the opportunities presented by the advent of the internet in the early 90s. Today the bank employs more 1500 people in financial centres around the world including London, Singapore, Paris, Zurich, Dubai and Tokyo.
From the outset Fournais has focused on leveraging technology to allow Saxo Bank to differentiate itself, leading Saxo Bank to become a fintech before the term was even coined. Ever since the first online trading platform was launched in 1998 the mission has been to democratise trading and investment by constantly utilising the prospects of disruptive technologies.
Today, Saxo Bank facilitates access to more than 35,000 tradeable instruments for a client base in over 170 countries and many of the world’s leading financial institutions.
Kim Fournais has invested in the rebuilding of the Danish island ‘Vejrø’ as an organic farm and meeting place for private people as well as corporations with good accommodation in the form of reconstructed farmhouses, houses, a restaurant, an airfield, and a port. As a part of the Vejrø group is also the award-winning luxury hotel Stella Maris.
Fournais is a keen pilot and is often in the cockpit himself when flying between Saxo Bank’s offices around the world.
